 Unit 6 Blog

The genre of this text is a non-fiction first-person narrative. Throughout the entirety of this text, we are introduced to the pronouns of: ‘my’, ‘I’, ‘me’, and ‘we’ of which are all first-person pronouns. It is also formed in a travel novel, whose target audience is likely to be those who are interested or genuinely curious about reading and looking into others' first handed thoughts on discovering or seeing something new for the first time.

The writer structures their novel in a particularly unique way. They start from the beginning and continue in chronological order, however, the first paragraph is much longer compared to the others. By doing this, the author is highlighting a specific factor of the story. In the first paragraph, the author goes into detail about the different names of ‘hoagies’, creating a longer paragraph. By doing this the audience notices the writer's attention to detail. It also highlights the different perspectives throughout the country. “My fare in such a grocery is often a sandwich of several names:..” As it continues it gives examples of ‘zeppelin’, ‘hoagie’, and ‘grinder’, showing the different names of subs and it provides the overall coverage of different perspectives all through the country on a sandwich and the names that they are given. While the other paragraphs are shorter to have the audience slowly absorb the new information as the topic changes in the writing piece. Continuing with structure, one of the paragraphs fully consists of an elongated list. While this list fully speaks about the ingredients included in the author's sandwich, it creates a transition into the next talked-about topic. Which slowly lets the readers take in all the information, preparing them for the key topics spoken about in the later paragraphs.

This excerpt is particularly difficult to understand, but after grasping a deep understanding of the language it is easily understood. For example, the text states, ``Bert- more commonly a Betty..”, ‘Bert’ and ‘Betty’ are not characters in the novel while they are examples in the hypothetical situation that is exhibited. Within the author provides a hypothetical situation and gives names to the hypothetical people, it enables the readers to create a more vivid picture in their head and expands the reader's imagination while reading the text. Another way the audience can create a picture in their head based on what they have read is through imagery in which the author presents with the words ‘yellowed’ and ‘blurry’ in regard to the looks of a snapshot. By using these adjectives in this way to describe what a picture looks like, imagery is created and a colorful picture is drawn in the reader's head.

Continuing with the language aspect, we are introduced to a complex simile; ‘A franchise sub is to a well-filled ginder from a grocery as shaken milk is a milkshake’ here we are introduced to a simile that not only compares the meaning of the names of a ‘sub’ and a ‘milkshake’ but furthers the audience's understanding within explaining why the rest of the countries reason behind having the prominently different names of the ‘hoagies’ relevance does not stand.

Moreover, in the language aspect; the author speaks about ‘Susquehanna’ in which he is presented in a grand way. ‘Whipping off his feet, and, ‘leave behind mud and stick’ within the author's usage of these words they are describing ‘Susquehanna’ with lexical to create an important and almost royal role. Which is interesting based on the voice of the writer. What the audience can gather from the words ‘mama’, ‘parlor’, and ‘throng’ is that they are all southern words indicating that the author is writing in a southern accent. We are also introduced to the word ‘village’ quite a few times. After evaluating these leading factors of the novel, the audience can claim that the author is writing in a small town, hence the ‘village’ written in the text, it is also suggested that the small town is a southern town, based on the southern slang used throughout the excerpt, finally, the audience can predict that the “Old man Susquehanna’ is particularly well respected. Not only his incapability to be dirty, but the fact that Sarah had to run home to fetch her laptop just to show a video of him, this distributes his importance to the audience.
